West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee was immediately arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in reference to a cash laundering case linked to the alleged teacher recruitment scam within the state. The arrest got here hours after Rs 20 crore was recovered from the minister’s shut aide.
The Trinamool chief was questioned all through the night time following the restoration of the cash. During questioning, Mr Chatterjee didn’t cooperate with the investigators because of which he was arrested, official sources informed NDTV.
“Partha Chatterjee was arrested after an overnight interrogation. During the interrogation, Mr Chatterjee complained of anxiety following the examination of his health by two doctors brought by the investigators. The interrogation was summarized after the doctors gave the go -ahead,” an official source told NDTV.
The source added that the probe agency will seek his custody in court to get more details about the alleged recruitment scam.
Currently, the industry and commerce minister, Mr Chatterjee holds the education portfolio after the alleged scam was cleared.
The Enforcement Directorate on Friday recovered ₹20 crore in cash from the house of an associate of Partha Chatterjee.
“The stated quantity is suspected to be proceeds of crime of the stated SSC rip-off,” the probe agency said in a statement.
More than 20 mobile phones were recovered from the premises of Arpita Mukherjee.
Aside from the Enforcement Directorate, or ED, the alleged scam is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. While the ED is looking into the money trail in the scam, the CBI is investigating alleged irregularities in the recruitment of Group-C and D staff and teachers in state-sponsored and aided schools.
The ruling Trinamool Congress described the raids as a “pitch” by the BJP government at the Center to “harass” its political opponents. Denying any position to play within the concern, the The BJP claimed the CBI and ED are “transferring heading in the right direction” and that “extra skeletons will fall out of the cabinet”.
