“The fear that ‘Big Brother’ is always watching and listening permeates all conversations between politicians across party lines in ‘new’ India. MPs and party leaders carry multiple phones, change numbers frequently, and converse in hushed tones when they meet. Fear kills democracy,” Alva tweeted.

In one other tweet flagging BSNL, Alva claimed her calls have been being diverted. “After speaking to some friends at the BJP today, all calls are diverted to my cell phone and I am unable to make or receive calls. When you restore the phone. I promise not to call any BJP, TMC or BJD MPs tonight,” she mentioned.

Following their tweet, BSNL filed an FIR on the matter. “Appropriate action has been taken on the complaint filed by Margaret Alva. BSNL has filed an FIR on the matter,” the Department of Telecom Sources mentioned.

In response to Alva’s allegations, Trade Union Minister Prahlad Joshi mentioned: “Why would anyone tap your phone? Let them call everyone, we are confident in what the outcome of the VP election will be. Why should we do this? These are childish accusations. She’s a high-ranking person and she shouldn’t be making such accusations.”
