A person was arrested in Bihar’s Jamui district on Monday for allegedly sharing faux movies of alleged assaults on migrant staff in Tamil Nadu state on social media, police stated.

Bihar Police’s Economic Crimes Unit (EOU) has charged 4 individuals in reference to the case, they stated in an announcement.

Those named within the case have been recognized as Aman Kumar, Rakesh Tiwary, Yuvraj Singh Rajput and Manish Kashyap. Aman Kumar, a resident of Laxmipur in Jamui district, has been arrested whereas a search is underway for the others, police stated.

“An investigation by the EOU revealed that the defendants engaged in the dissemination of fake videos of migrants killed and beaten in Tamil Nadu on social media,” the assertion stated.

Thirty of those movies have been extensively shared on social media, forcing migrant staff from Bihar to flee Tamil Nadu in panic, police stated.

Notices have been despatched to service suppliers for preserving 42 of these movies — 9 on Facebook, 15 on Twitter and YouTube, and three on Gmail — for additional investigation, they stated.

“A 10-member EOU team is analyzing these videos,” police stated, including that those that publish and share such movies to unfold rumors might be handled rigorously.

The Bihar authorities despatched a crew of 4 senior officers to Tamil Nadu to coordinate with officers investigating the case there.
